What's New for the 2017 Hyundai Sonata?

The 2017 Hyundai Sonata has four trim levels: the base-level SE, the fuel efficiency-oriented Eco, the sport-oriented Sport, and the top-level Limited. Also available are “2.0T” variants of the Sport and Limited, so named because of the displacement of their engine. While the Sport 2.0T is ranked between the regular Sport and the regular Limited, the Limited 2.0T functions as the top-of-the-line version of the Sonata. The SE, Sport, and Limited go with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that generates 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, while the Eco has a 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I4 with 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0T trim level relies on a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I4 that generates 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which is the highest output of all the Sonata engines. The Eco engine is hitched to a 7-speed EcoShift dual clutch transmission for maximizing gas mileage and allowing greater gear shifting control, while the others go with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Designed as a five-seater, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata yields 106.1 cubic feet of passenger volume, and its cargo space of 16.3 cubic feet can be expanded by folding down the rear seatback. You’d need to upgrade to at least the Sport for 8-way power adjustability with power lumbar support on the driver’s seat, the Sport 2.0T for front-seat heating capability, and the Limited for 6-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat and leather seating surfaces. The Limited 2.0T has additional front-seat ventilating capability and an integrated position memory system for the driver’s seat. Standard comfort and convenience on the 2017 Sonata include HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, the Blue Link suite of car care services, remote keyless entry, and a six-speaker stereo system that includes a 7-inch color touchscreen and SiriusXM satellite radio service. Upper-level features include dual-zone automatic control, 8-inch color touchscreen navigation, a tilt-and-slide moonroof, and a nine-speaker 400-watt premium audio system.

For safety, the new Sonata starts off with electronic vehicle stability, a driver’s blind spot mirror, a rearview camera, power four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, and a nine-airbag system. The Limited 2.0T is stuffed with many more safety features, such as lane departure warning, rear parking sensors, dynamic bending light, and automatic emergency braking.
